By 1964 Highlife had become almost the primus inter pares of the popular dances of the Modern
State of Ghana. There have been a number of Variations of this dance. The piece, a reflection of
Ghana, was carved to represent the spirit in which Ghanaians were when the announcement of modern
statehood and national independence of the Gold Coast was celebrated or accepted in 1957. The dance
epitomized the mirth and the "largeness of spirit" in modern Ghana.
