DR OKU AMPOFO (1908-1998) was not
only a physician, a pioneer in the use of herbal medicine and founder of
the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine, but also an actor
and sculptor.
Begun as a hobby during his medical student days in
Edinburgh, his sculpture flourished in Ghana and he soon
achieved international fame. His works, executed in multi-coloured
hard woods or cement and terrazzo, display not only unusual
artistic beauty but true understanding of the medium used. They
also portray cultural and socio-religious aspects of the Ghanaian
way of life.
Dr Ampofo exhibited in Senegal, Nigeria, England, United States of
America, Israel, Brazil, and Romania. He influenced
many contemporary Ghanaian artists, painters, sculptors and
ceramists alike.
