DR OKU AMPOFO (1908-1998) was not
only a physician, a pioneer in the use of herbal medicine and founder of
the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine, but also an actor
and sculptor. Begun as a hobby during his medical student days in Edinburgh, his sculpture flourished in Ghana and he soon achieved international fame. His works, executed in multi-coloured hard woods or cement and terrazzo, display not only unusual artistic beauty but true understanding of the medium used. They also portray cultural and socio-religious aspects of the Ghanaian way of life. Dr Ampofo exhibited in Senegal, Nigeria, England, United States of America, Israel, Brazil, and Romania.
